Vegetable planter :) wow!

20 Apr

Feb 14th 2017

April 1st above! Still so neat! I just added the trellis for the tomatoes since I don’t have a cage.

And this below is April 19th. Only 18 days from when I put the trellis in and now you can barely see it! Growth is insane!

The squash is turning into a beast!! I tried to space them out but it looked so sparse in the beginning… and when you buy six packs… 😊😊😂

The front row are beets and shallots.

Then red bell peppers which do not seem happy at all, next up broccolini is I have harvest twice from already.

Next up tomatoes then zucchini.

Also a volunteer possibly spaghetti squash.

So I set up drip irrigation which runs 20 mins every day. It still needs adjusting – Any tips for drip irrigation settings will be greatly appreciated! 🤗

Tiny Tim Tomato would do well in hanging basket

Still alive! Barely

These are still producing tomatoes although I did notice they are ripening at a smaller size. They used to be regular cherry tomato size but now some of them are as small as peas!

And they make a great hanging plant but my neighbors might not appreciated them taking over the benches…

One of the pots on by my apartment door was knocked over and he really doesn’t look too healthy but still producing tomatoes.

Definitely worth growing these… Maybe next year I will stagger the planting a bit more as I got a large harvest early in the season. I have three pots of Tiny Tims. Each pot is about 7-8 inches across and has 3-6 plants in it and they all seem to be doing well. I have one stray tiny Tim plant cohabiting with a 5 gallon pot of artichoke and that one isn’t any bigger or heavier producing. So it appears it does about the same where ever it is planted. Go plant some! Now I am curious as to how they’re going to so over a San Diego ‘winter’.

Tiny Tim Tomatoes in container outside my door. Very cute! The toms are bigger than I though they wouldbe. Haven't had any ripened ones yet. I wonder how they will taste....

A ripening bunch of stupice tomatoes. June 2011

My container Stupice is growing like CRAZY. Its so easy to grow and produces so many tomatoes its great! And as you can see, I am growing it in a reasonably small pot. But it keeps on producing! I started these from seed back in January as its cold tolerant but it seems to be my most reliable tomato right now.Earlier in the season, I would only get a small handful of tiny cherry sized tomatoes but they’re growing bigger and pumper now.

I also noticed it better to pick them when they are slightly green as once they’re red, they get a bit mushy. So along with my tomatoes, I also plucked an onion. I planted my onion sets in January which was a loooooong time ago and have been waiting patiently for the leaves to brown and “fall over” but it just hasn’t happened, so I’m just going to harvest as and when I need them as I am concerned I’m going to end up with 50 onions in late summer or fall…how will I ever eat them all!
I bought a pint of mixed onion sets and I noticed that some onions all started to product a flower stalk. Bummer, I believe they’re not supposed to flower…BUT luckily it just seems to be the red onions that are flowering. They still produce a small sized bulb and the tops can be used as green onions so definitely no waste here.

A few weeks later, my glarlic dried and I braided the leaves. I wish I had grown more of them!

It was very exciting eating a dinner made from mostly home grown stuff. Even my husband was impressed 🙂 Homegrown onions, garlic and tomato make a perfect sauce! Yum!

Tiny Tim’s tiny tomatoes.

23 May

They’re so dinky right now! So cute 🙂 wonder how big they will get. The plant is getting bigger. I removed some of the lower leaves as it was starting to brown. I am thinking about pinching the top off to keep the plant round and short but I always find it hard to bring myself to do that.

Tiny Tim Tomatoes - Tiny Flowers. May 2011

Look at these cute little flowers! I can’t imagine how tiny the tomatoes are going to be! Pea sized?! Or petite pois sized? We will see!

I thought there were three plants in the 7.5″ pot but there looks like there are actually four. Tight squeeze for the Tims!

The smaller 6″ pot only has one plant.
